Following are a few past events organised by Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva.
Society's website launch event
The official website of SOCIETY FOR SRIMANTA SANKARADEVA, www.sankaradeva.com was launched in a glittering function held in the District Library, Guwahati on January 1, 2012. Representatives of major organisations associated with the Sankaradeva movement like Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, Asom Sattra Mahasabha, Eka Sarana Bhagavati Samaj etc participated in the event. It was attended by several litterateurs. The website was launched by President of the Society, Dr Sanjib Kr Borkakoti. It was designed by Ashim Dutta.
Release of Gunamala's English translation
Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva brought out the English translation of Srimanta Sankaradeva’s holy book ‘Gunamala’. It was formally released in a solemn function at Nagaon on 7 April, 2013. The work was sponsored by Bhoirob Mahanta of Thukubil Sattra, Golaghat. The translation was done by Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti. The transliteration of original verse with diacritical marks was done by Jadav Chandra Mahanta of Titabor. The event was graced by Sattradhikar Bhadrakrishna Goswami and others.
International Conference on Majuli
Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva organized an international conference on Majuli on 8th July, 2012. The objective of the conference was to create awareness about Majuli among the masses as well as to help the concerned authorities in World Heritage-related works. Dr Arvind Phukan, an eminent engineer from USA was the Chief Resource Person. Narayan Chandra Goswami, Sattradhikar of Natun Kamalabari Sattra inaugurated a photo exhibition at the outset. The society was collaborated by Core Professional Group-Brahmaputra, Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS) International (USA), Assam Society of America Foundation (USA), and Majuli Cultural Landscape Management Authority (MCLMA) in this venture. The conference was held in the Bishnu-Nirmala Bhavan at Latasil, Guwahati.
Workshop on Manuscript Preparation and Painting in Sankari Art form
A workshop on ‘Manuscript Preparation and Painting in Sankari art form’ was held under the auspices of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva from July 7 to 11, 2013 at Dhing. The venue was Dhing College. Mridu Moucham Bora was the convener as well as the resource person of the workshop. Total 39 participants attended the five day workshop. President Dr Sanjib Kr Borkakoti and co-ordinator Pradip Hazarika attended both inauguration and valedictory functions.
National seminar on Srimanta Sankaradeva's Contributions
A National seminar on Srimanta Sankaradeva’s Contributions was held at Madhupur Than, Kochbehar under the auspices of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva on 23rd November 2014. It was attended by several scholars and artistes from Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Prasenjit Barman, former MP and Member of Kochbehar Debottar Trust, Himadri Sankar Bhattacharjee of Kochbehar, Dr Nripendra Nath Paul of Kochbehar, Sachindra Nath Roy of Kochbehar, Jitendra Pradhani, the newly elected President of Asom Sattra Mahasabha and Babul Bora, Chief Secretary of Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha attended the event. Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka, Vice Chancellor of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya inaugurated the seminar. An exhibition of Sanchipat, Masks etc was held as a part of the event. It was inaugurated by Rajanikanta Dutta, Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha. Lakhikanta Mahanta, Sattradhikar of Madhupur Than, Padma Mahanta, Sattradhikar, and Bhabendra Nath Deka, Upa-Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha also attended the event. There was a Lecture-cum-demonstration of Sattriya Nritya by Prateesha Suresh from Mumbai in the event. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, President of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva conducted the seminar. Palash Pratim Bora, an active member of the society offered vote of thanks.
Workshop on Brajawali
A workshop on Brajawali was held in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati under the auspices of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS) in association with Parampara Prabah, and in collaboration with International Council on Monuments and Sites, on 20th November, 2022. Dr Nanigopal Mahanta, Education Advisor of Govt of Assam inaugurated the workshop. It was addressed by Dr. Basanta Kr. Goswami, Dr. Mukul Chakravarty and Sri Kanaklal Das. President of SSS, Dr Sanjib Kr Borkakoti conducted the workshop. Several dignitaries including Sanjib Sabhapandit, Dr Madhuchanda Chaliha Bhuyan, Dr Mallika Kandali, Utpal Barua participated in the workshop.
Bargeet Samaroh
A Bargeet Samaroh was held under the auspices of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva at Duliajan Club on December 25, 2016. It was sponsored by Sattriya Kendra of Sangeet Natak Akademy. Several maestros presented Bargeet in full classical style in the Bargeet Samaroh. It was for the first time that such an event was organised in Assam. The maestros who performed were Nilakanta Burabhakat of Bhogpur Sattra, Majuli, Gunindra Nath Oja of Barpeta, Gopiram Borgayan Oja Burabhakat and Upen Borgayan of Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, Majuli, Dhiren Chekonidhara of Narayanpur, Dr Pabitrapran Goswami of Saudkuchi Sattra, Jorhat and Ranjit Bora of Golaghat. Nilakanta Burabhakat and Gopiram Borgayan Oja Burabhakat also performed Oja-geet. Ranjan Bezbaruah of Nagaon, sang a Bargeet in Sanskrit. Dr Mallika Kandali performed a Sattriya Nritya based on Bargeet. The event was inaugurated by Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti. There was also an exhibition-cum-sale of Aharya and manuscript paintings made by the trainees of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva in different workshops. Hemaprabha Chutiya’s marvellous depiction of Namghosha and Gunamala in cloth were also exhibited in it. Pradip Hazarika, co-ordinator of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva welcomed everyone while Mridu Moucham Bora compered the event.
Workshop on Aharya of Ankiya Bhaona
A fortyfive day residential workshop on Aharjya of Ankiya Bhaona by Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was held in Dhing from 14th December, 2014. It was sponsored by Sattriya Kendra of Sangeet Natak Akademi. In this workshop, costume making, jewellery making, mask making, make-up etc were taught. A team of experts decided the content of the workshop beforehand. Mridu Moucham Bora, Secretary of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva co-ordinated the entire workshop. It was inaugurated by Bhadrakrishna Goswami. The objective was that the trainees should set up own workshops for producing these items and thus become self-employed after the training. It was for the first time that such a comprehensive workshop on Aharjya was organised anywhere in India for any type of drama form. The inauguration of the workshop was addressed by Devananda Deva Goswami, Sattradhikar of Bardowa Narowa Sattra, Dr Ratul Bora, Regsitrar of Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Rajat Ganguli, Director of Sangeet Natak Akademi, North East Centre, and Jadab Mahanta, Deka Sattriya of Bogi Ai Alengi Sattra. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, President of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva chaired the function. The workshop ended on January 27.
Nagaon Friendship Day
Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva celebrated a unique event ‘Nagaon Friendship Day’ on January 5, 2014 in Nagaon. The event honored a few individuals contributing to Sankari culture. A Friendship Walk took place in the Nagaon town on that morning. There were display of different facets of Sankari culture like Gayan-Bayan, Naam-Kirtan, Bhaona, Mask, Diha-Naam, Thiyanam, Sattriya Nritya etc in the walk. Several social organizations including Batadrava Than, Asom Sattra Mahasabha, Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, Sutradhaar and Kalang Kala Kendra took part in the Walk. It was followed by the felicitation of Sri Dharmakanta Mahanta, Raidangia, Sri Thuleswar Barua, Bardowa, Sri Shishuram Barua, Bardowa, Sri Madhav Das, Nagaon, Sri Rakhal Das, Nagaon, Sri Nityananda Goswami, Kuji Sattra, Sri Kaliram Bora, Bheleuguri, Sri Jadab Chandra Mahanta, Titabor, Sri Bishnuram Handique, Jorhat, Sri Girish Chandra Mahanta, Charing, and Sri Devakanta Hazarika, Puranigudam. They were given offered financial assistance also. There were Ankiya play song recital, Gayan-Bayan performance, Sattriya Nritya recital and Dashavatar Nritya recital. There was also an exhibition-cum-sale of Sanchipat art, Mask, Kuhila products.
