SUMMARY:Emergency Conservation Drive to protect flood-damaged manuscripts
DESCRIPTION:Society for Srimanta Sankardeva has launched an emergency conservation campaign in Upper Assam after the recent floods damaged ancient manuscripts in many Sattras\, Namghars\, Buddhist monasteries and private collections. Several bodies have supported this campaign. \nThe flash floods of July 2026 affected more than 600\,000 people in six districts of Upper Assam including Sivasagar\, Jorhat\, Golaghat and Charaideo. Centuries old manuscripts written in the tradition of Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavadevas are currently on the verge of extinction due to damage from flood and fungus. It is very important to preserve this intangible cultural heritage of Assam. Society for Srimanta Sankardeva has therefore launched an immediate campaign to preserve this precious heritage. \nThe campaign has recovered manuscripts from flood-hit areas of Sivasagar\, Charaideo\, Dibrugarh\, Jorhat and Golaghat districts and provided emergency preservation care. It will also create a digital archive of manuscripts for future generations after the restoration work is complete. In addition\, volunteers are being trained in these areas about how to preserve manuscripts during floods or other natural disasters in the future. \nSociety for Srimanta Sankardeva calls upon all Sattras\, Namgharas\, Buddhist monasteries and local people to co-operate in this initiative. If anyone has flood-damaged manuscripts in their custody\, please contact heritage conservator Mridu Moucham Bora at the number 9401383517. The Society team will visit their locations to provide services. \nOur Secretary and Heritage Conservator Mridu Moucham Bora went to those districts. He visited twelve Sattra and Namghar. He rescued 101 manuscripts from under the mud and water. The conservation work is now going on in our Heritage Centre located at Dhing in Nagaon district. SUMMARY:Add-on course on 'Manuscript and Manuscriptology'
DESCRIPTION:Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva has launched yet another initiative. It is going to start a six-month add-on course on ‘Manuscript and Manuscriptology’ in Jagiroad College (Autonomous). \nThe course will start from September 19th September\, 2026. Applications have already been received from 26th August. One can apply upto 6th September for enrolment in the course. \nSankardev Study Centre of Jagiroad College will manage the course in collaboration with Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva. Heritage expert Mridu Moucham Bora has designed the course. He will also supervise it. \nThis course will cover the manuscript tradition of Assam\, manuscript studies\, inscription preparation\, study\, preservation etc in detail. All students who have passed the second year of Higher Secondary (10+2 Passed)\, Arts-Science-Commerce are eligible to participate in this course. \nThere are also opportunities for students from other colleges or institutions besides Jagiroad College to enrol in this course. \nPrincipal Dr Bhaben Ch. SUMMARY:International webinar on restoration\, safeguarding and preservation of manuscripts and other historic cultural materials affected by the recent devastating floods in Assam
DESCRIPTION:Several districts in upper Assam on the South bank of Brahmaputra suffered from an unprecedented flood in July\, 2026. More than a hundred persons lost their lives as flood water submerged the banks of Dikhow river. \nThe floods have severely impacted valuable Sanchipat manuscripts\, traditional masks\, textiles\, ritual objects and other historic materials\, causing extensive damage through inundation\, mud\, moisture and biological deterioration. The loss extends beyond physical objects to the living knowledge\, skills\, traditions and community memories embedded within them. \nMembers of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva rescued 101 Sanchipat manuscripts from under the silt and water. The rescue team visited twelve Sattra and Namghar for this. The conservation work of these manuscripts is now going on in the Cultural Heritage Centre of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva at Dhing in Nagaon district. Royal Global University\, Guwahati\, Dr Binoy K. Bordoloi\, Chairman\, Naamghar Association of America\, Cotton Collegiate Ex Students’ Group\, 1976 and several well-wishers have extended generous financial assistance for this work. \n \nA webinar has now been organised to highlight this great rescue and conservation work. ICOMOS India\, in association with ICICH ICOMOS and partner organizations like Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva\, has organised this international webinar on the urgent challenges of restoration\, safeguarding and preservation of manuscripts and other historic cultural materials affected by the recent devastating floods in Assam. \nThe webinar will provide an opportunity to share experiences of community-led emergency recovery and first-aid conservation\, discuss challenges encountered in Assam\, and seek international knowledge and professional guidance for restoration and long-term safeguarding. The methodology as well as history of conservation activities will be narrated by the heritage experts. \nThe panelists of the webinar are Mridu Moucham Bora\, Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti and Ashim Dutta. We are glad that Dr Ángel Cabeza Monteira\, President of ICICH will be present as special invitee.
